Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune Five Salt Lake City fire crews work to put out at fire in the 400 block of 1200 East. A dog's incessant barking alerted its owner to a fire in the second floor of their rental home, Friday, May 17, 2013. Three people who were home at the time were able to get out of the burning house unharmed.

Four people were displaced Friday afternoon after a fire damaged their home near the University of Utah.

The fire started about 3:15 p.m. in a second-floor room of the house, which has been converted into several apartments, said Salt Lake City Fire Deputy Chief Dan Walker.

Two of the residents were home at the time of the fire, and when the first firefighters arrived, they found both of them outside and unharmed. The other residents weren’t home.

The residents directed firefighters how to get to the fire quickly, and they soon doused it but not before it caused enough damage to make the house uninhabitable.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started, Walker said.

How much of the home was damaged, and the cost of that damage, was not immediately available.
