The Richfield girls' golf team edged the rest of the field Tuesday at Lakeside Golf Course to earn the school's second consecutive Class 2A state championship.

Carly Jorgensen, Aubry Porter, Brittany Franks and Keali Kimball combined for the top team score of 266.

Jorgensen finished with a tournament-best 72 (82 points in the Stableford scoring system), three strokes better than South Summit's Ashley Stubbs and four better than Grand County's Jessica Pyatt. It was the second year in a row Jorgensen and Stubbs finished first and second in the state tournament.

Beaver senior Celest Chavez shot an 84, helping her team to a second-place finish.

After taking second to Richfield last year, the Beavers had been hoping for more this time around. Under last year's scoring system, which only counted each team's top three scores, Beaver finished 10 points behind Richfield. If the fourth score had counted, as it did this year, Beaver would have been the champions.

But even with the scoring change, the Beavers fell short of their mark.

"We were a little bit disappointed," Beaver coach Marilee Eyre said. "We just felt like we were a little more prepared this year, our seniors had worked harder and we thought all year we could beat Richfield."

Beaver's four top golfers combined for a Stableford score of 250.
