An 18-year-old man is expected to recover from injuries he sustained after falling some 30 feet while hiking Friday afternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the man was hiking alone on the Temple Quarry Trail when he decided to take a detour heading south. As he climbed up the steep, rocky slope, the man lost his footing and fell, injuring his hand and face.

According to police, the man called a friend on his cell phone, who then called 911. A medical helicopter located the man, and search and rescue officials got the hiker to a spot where the helicopter could take him off the mountain.

Hoyal said the man had minor injuries and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center.
