Spanish Fork • As Jaycee Reber rounded the bases after lifting a first-inning pitch well over the center-field wall, it looked as if the Enterprise Wolves’ bats would be on display in the second round of the Class 2A state softball tournament Thursday evening.
Instead, it was small ball, base running and the gift of a few errors that pushed the Wolves past the Grand County Red Devils 8-3.
“Our girls usually frown when we give them the bunt sign because they want to hit away,” Enterprise coach Duane Wallin said. “But all year long we kept telling them that some time, some game it’s going to pay off.”
With the game knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Enterprise pitcher Dakota Robinson helped break the stalemate with a screaming grounder that slipped between the third baseman’s legs. After beating out the throw from left field, Robinson was standing safely on second base. The Wolves then loaded the bases on two misplayed bunts, and a Dani Hess sacrifice fly to center scored Robinson.
“We’ve kind of known up here we would have to use small ball a little bit,” Robinson said. “And we thought it was one of their weaknesses.”
With the game still close, the wheels came off for the Red Devils in the bottom of the fifth.
After an error put Enterprise first baseman Darbye Moyle on base, center fielder Taylor Phelps laid down a bunt that died between the circle and the plate, which allowed her to beat the throw to first. Then with Moyle in the middle of retreating back to second, the Red Devils overthrew the ball to third, allowing Moyle to score and Phelps to advance to third. A sacrifice bunt on the next play gave the Wolves a 5-2 lead.
Grand’s Madie Camp drove in a run when she hit a shot that stuck in the center fielder’s glove for a second before a flash of yellow could be seen rolling across the green outfield grass during the top of six.
Enterprise’s bats returned in the bottom half of the inning.
After one more Grand throwing error gave the Wolves another run, Enterprise uncorked a pair of hits to center field to score runs and put the game out of reach.
