The teen has been charged with homicide by assault in juvenile court, although prosecutors will ask that his case be transferred to adult court.

The death of youth soccer ref Ricardo Portillo is a tragic reminder of how heated competition can spiral out of control.

On Tuesday, The Tribune hosted a live video chat about the atmosphere in today’s youth sports and how referees, coaches, parents and players can keep their cool on the field and on the sidelines. Guests included Salt Lake Tribune columnist Kurt Kragthorpe and Dan Gould of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University.
