The “HardDrive” tour brings hard-rock giants Bullet For My Valentine and Halestorm together under the same roof.
Bullet For My Valentine, a Welsh metal band, has seen its last three albums debut in the top-15 on the Billboard charts despite no mainstream radio airplay. The latest album, “Temper Temper,” was released in February offering a looser, more organic sound, said frontman Matt Tuck in a recent telephone interview. “We wrote it as we went along,” he said. “It was spur-of-the-moment. We just wanted to do something different.”
Tuck spent much of 2012 touring with the supergroup AxeWound, which offers a softer-edge that his metal band music. “I’ve always been a fan of the lighter stuff,” he said, “like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. Even Metallica isn’t a screamy band.”
Halestorm, from Pennsylvania, features frontwoman Elizabeth Hale, better known as the vowel-less “Lzzy.”
In a phone interview, Lzzy said her guilty pleasure is music from the 1980s.
“I can listen to Whitesnake all day,” she said, adding that Heart’s power ballad “All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You” is her “go-to karaoke song.”
That explains the band’s 2011 all-covers EP, that includes songs by Guns N’ Roses, Temple of the Dog and Skid Row.
It also explains why the band’s most recent album “The Strange Case Of...” features aggressive rockers and intimate ballads such as “Here’s To Us,” which actress Lea Michele sung on an episode of “Glee.”
The band is riding high after its blood-curdling lead single “Love Bites (So Do I),” won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
Halestorm become the only female-fronted band to win the category and to be nominated.
“The Academy shouldn’t know who we are,” Lzzy said. “But it’s fun to do the red carpet thing — every girl’s dream.”
Despite the experience, she doesn’t do the social thing. “I don’t party much,” she said. “This ruins my rock-and-roll reputation.”
Young Guns and Stars in Stereo are also on the bill.
