U. wins first-ever Pac-12 series

Pitcher Kayce Nieto earned her second victory of the weekend, and the Utah softball team won a Pac-12 series for the first time since joining the conference by defeating UCLA 8-3 on Sunday at Utah Softball Stadium.

Nieto allowed five hits and three earned runs to improve to 5-5 this season. Shelby Pacheco drove in four runs for the Utes (16-20, 3-9), who also won consecutive Pac-12 games for the first time.

UCLA fell to 26-13, 3-9.


Washington State 5, Utah 0 • Tyler Relf hit two doubles for the Utes (14-14, 4-8), who managed just three other hits in a loss at home.

Utah Valley 9, NJIT 2 • Riley White doubled twice in UVU's eight-run second inning, and the Wolverines (12-18, 3-1 Great West) won the weekend series in Newark, N.J.

Women's tennis

Utah 5, Washington State 0 • The Utes (10-7, 4-5 Pac-12) won at first, second and third singles, including Tereza Bekerova's three-set win over Liudmila Vasilieva at No. 1, to earn the home victory.

Utah State 4, Seattle 3 • The Aggies (5-9, 1-4 WAC) swept the doubles matches and split the singles to earn the victory in Logan. McKenzie Davis breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Anna Lambert at No. 1 singles.
