A 40-year-old woman was in serious condition Wednesday, the day after she was stabbed in the neck during what initially was reported to be an attempted mugging in downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Det. Shawn Josephson said authorities were looking for a suspect described a white male adult, 5-foot-7, with brown hair and beard stubble, and wearing dark clothing.

The woman was walking by herself through a driveway behind Faustina Restaurant, 454 E. 300 South, about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday when she was confronted by the suspect. Police initially were told the man had tried to grab the woman's purse and then stabbed her when she resisted, but Josephson said Wednesday detectives now were not sure if a mugging attempt was involved.

"Right now, we're just calling it an aggravated assault," he said.

Bleeding, the woman went to the restaurant and employees called 911.
