Prep baseball: Spanish Fork rallies past Syracuse in seventh inning
Spanish Fork • It wouldn't be hard to read the mind of Syracuse pitcher Spencer Johnson.
What just happened? Why was Spanish Fork's Cam Money pumping his first on the way to first base?
The game should have been over, but closing out Spanish Fork proved more difficult than hitting a fastball from Dons pitcher Maverik Buffo.
The Dons rallied to score six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday afternoon to beat Syracuse 8-7.
The ending was so surprising that Spanish Fork coach Jim Nelson shook his head and said, "Just when you thought you've seen it all."
Syracuse led 7-2 and looked like it would have little trouble finishing off a game it had dominated.
After Spanish Fork used a single to start the seventh, Johnson got just what he wanted a comebacker but there appeared to be some confusion on who was covering second base. The throw was a little low and was dropped.
Had Syracuse been able to turn the double play, the game would have ended when Johnson struck out Brock Nelson, but the Titans' miscue instead created just enough of a crack for Spanish Fork to knock it down. Colton Olsen singled in a run. Cooper Beck and Connor Johnson followed with walks.
Logan Jensen then delivered a two-run run single and after Braxton Argyle walked, Money hit a line drive to center field that ended the game.
"We probably didn't deserve to win that game. They outplayed us for six innings, but it's a credit to the kids that they didn't give up because we were down five in the last innings," Jim Nelson said. "They gave us a little opening. Good teams will take advantage of that, and we did. That was a fun win."
The win spoiled a big day from Rieley Gibson, who went 3 for 4 with three doubles, and Jayden Bearnson, who went 2 for 4 with a triple.
Money, Olsen and Jensen each had two hits for Spanish Fork.
The team's comeback made an unlikely winner out of Buffo, who struck out the side in the seventh to help Spanish Fork improve to 2-0. Syracuse fell to 0-3.
