Why not secede?

After reading about all the attempts of Utah's Republican legislators to assert authority over the federal government on gun laws, land policy, endangered species, etc., it seems clear that what they want is a national government with very little power, similar to what the original 13 states had under the Articles of Confederation.

They seem to have forgotten that we tried that, and it resulted in an assemblage of factions too flimsy to hold together as a nation.

The Legislature could save us all time and money by simply seceding from the Union, declaring Utah a sovereign nation ruled by the Utah Republican Party, and banning popular elections, as well as all other political parties.

After all, that's what they really want, isn't it?
