Provo • The later the season gets, the better Tory Wilson gets for Utah’s gymnastics team.
Wilson won the all-around Friday, scoring a 39.45 to help the Utes beat BYU and North Carolina State in BYU’s Marriott Center.
The all-around win was the second of the year for Wilson, who also won the all-around against Cal when she scored a career-best 39.475.
Wilson started competing in the all-around when Corrie Lothrop was lost for the season with an Achilles injury.
The only event Wilson wasn’t competing on at that point was the uneven bars. But aside from a fall two weeks ago at Washington, Wilson has been a steady contributor on the event. She scored a 9.825 against Cal, a 9.775 against Stanford and a 9.825 against BYU.
“What a great story she has been for us,” Utah coach Greg Marsden said. “More than anyone else she has really stepped up and filled that gap for us.”
Wilson also won her eighth vault title in a row for the Utes. If she wins next week at Georgia, she will tie Ashley Postell’s streak. The former Utah great won nine in a row in 2008.
Wilson, a sophomore, also had a 9.875 on the balance beam and a 9.8 on the floor against the Cougars.
“I’m definitely excited,” Wilson said. “It was a big boost of confidence, too, to come down here and show what we can do on the road. I just wanted to go out and do the best I could. I wasn’t thinking about winning.”
Wilson isn’t the only gymnast racking up the wins for the Utes. Georgia Dabritz won her sixth bars title with a 9.9. A Ute has won the bars title the last seven meets, with Dabritz earning six of them and Nansy Damianova one. The only meet the Utes haven’t won the bars was in the opener against UCLA. Dabritz was the highest Ute finisher in third.
BYU honored Kaitlin Hoffman and Sarah Yandow Wensel on Senior Night.
Hoffman didn’t compete; Yandow Wenslow had 9.8 on the vault, 9.85 on the bars and 9.675 on the floor.
The Utes’ last home meet is on March 16 against Florida. However, the Utes don’t have any seniors to honor and will hold “Alumni Night,” instead of the typical Senior Night festivities.
Haley Lange scored a 9.8 on the balance beam in exhibition and a 9.825 on vault. … Becky Tutka had a 9.75 on vault and Mary Beth Lofgren had a 9.725 on the uneven bars. … The Utes’ win was worth three points in the Deseret Duel rivalry series, giving Utah a 22-16 edge. Utah also won meetings in football, soccer and men’s and women’s swimming.
