3A girls' basketball: Snow Canyon cruises past Delta (with video)
Ogden • Snow Canyon guard Amy Harris had been through it all before. The pressures of playing in the state tournament were not foreign to her, and the dazzle of the bright lights and large crowds were not intimidating or unexpected.
So after a first half in which Delta had outworked the Warriors, and her teammates were showing signs of nerves, Harris, who led the Warriors' state title run last year, knew it fell to her to set the example for the rest of the team.
Her teammates responded, and the Warriors turned a one-point halftime lead into a 53-36 win over Delta on Thursday at the Dee Events Center in the Class 3A quarterfinals.
"We just had to do the things that they were doing and do it even more, I think," Harris said of how the Warriors handled the Rabbits' scrappy style of play. "We played with a lot of heart in the second half."
The Warriors came out of halftime seemingly reinvigorated. They swarmed on defense, forcing tough looks and limiting the Rabbits to four points in the third quarter.
In the fourth, the offense came, too. By the time Snow Canyon had finished an impressive shooting display that included baskets from all over the court, pushing their lead to 20 points, the game had turned into a blowout.
During a timeout late in the fourth, after Snow Canyon had hit a 3, the Warriors huddled on their bench, and nearly every player let loose a smile. After a long season, they were returning to the semifinals, and another title was within reach.
"At halftime we came in, and we got everything together," Harris said. "I think in the first half, we had those jitters and those nerves, but we were able to come out and play how we really play and get it done."
With the win, the Warriors are just two wins away from repeating as Class 3A champions, which would cap Harris' career in memorable fashion. The senior averaged nearly 17 points each of the last two seasons and will leave as one of the Warriors' most successful players in recent memory.
"I can't believe it's almost over," Harris said.
