College golf: Utah State's Tanner Higham loses in six-hole playoff at Pat Hicks Invitational
St. George • Utah State golfer Tanner Higham nearly won medalist honors at the Pat Hicks Invitational on Tuesday, losing to Cal Poly's Camden Price in a six-hole playoff after they and College of Charleston's Zach Munroe finished the two-day tournament at 2-under 142.
Cal Poly won the team title at +8, followed by College of Charleston (+9) and Dixie State (+10). Utah Valley University (+16) was fifth, Weber State (+29) was 10th and Southern Utah (+33) was 11th out of 14 teams.
Dixie State's Hayden Christensen finished in a tie for fourth at even-par 144 after shooting a round-best 5-under 67. Utah Valley's Mason Casper finished in a tie for 12th place with a 3-over 147 and Weber State's Jordan Herzog finished in a four-way tie for 17th with a 4-over 148.
The Gold Rush • In Yorba Linda, Calif, Lea Garner finished in a tie for 34th place, helping the BYU women's golf team place ninth in the three-day Gold Rush on Tuesday.
Long Beach State, which hosted the tournament, finished first at 53-over par. Gonzaga (+63) was second and UC Irvine (+74) finished third. BYU finished at +103 in the 11-team tournament.
Gonzaga's Raychelle Santos won the tournament, shooting a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish at +8.
Lumberjack at Ocotillo • In Chandler, Ariz., the Southern Utah women's golf team shaved 16 strokes off its opening-round score to remain in fourth place at 11-team Lumberjack at Ocotillo.
Sadie Palmer is in second place after shooting a 2-over 74 for a two-day total of 151 one stroke behind Kelsey Haynie of McNeese State. Weber State's Amanda Snyder also shot a 74 on Tuesday and sits in third place at 152. The Wildcats are in third place at +55. McNeese State leads at +35 and Northern Arizona (+55) is second. Lynn-Marie Nagel shot a 75 on Tuesday and is tied for 11th at 158 for Utah Valley, which is ninth at +88.
