Utah gymnasts beat Cal as Wilson earns a perfect score on the vault
Utah's gymnastics team lived up to its promise it would make up for the absence of Corrie Lothrop as it scored a season high a week after losing its top gymnast to a season-ending injury.
The Utes beat Cal 197.05-192.75 in a meet highlighted by a 10.0 from Tory Wilson on the vault.
Wilson went on to win the all-around with a 39.475.
Utah coach Greg Marsden said he challenged his team to make up for Lothrop's big scores.
"We have to move forward," Marsden said. "I challenged them to not only try to replace Corrie's scores but find a way to be better at least in terms of score and we did that tonight."
That they did so in such impressive fashion bodes well for a young team still without key gymnasts who are out with injuries.
One of those, Kassandra Lopez, made her first appearance on the balance beam and scored 9.8.
Other highlights were 9.9s from Georgia Dabritz on the balance beam and floor and a 9.925 from Becky Tutka on the floor.
Overall the Utes couldn't have hoped for a better night.
"No one can replace Corrie, but we can sure try," Wilson said.
