Enjoy Valentine's dining at Utah eateries

Dining • Too busy on the big day? Utah restaurants extend their Valentine's specials.

Valentine's Day may be Thursday, Feb. 14, but many Utah restaurants are offering romantic dining specials all week long. It's welcome news for those who want to avoid the crowds on one of the busiest dining days of the year.

If you want to celebrate early, make reservations for the "Deadly Sins" wine event on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Meditrina, 1394 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City. For its monthly wine social, chef and owner Jennifer Gilroy will create four different culinary creations, each one pays homage to one of her favorite deadline sins: gluttony, wrath, envy and lust. The social runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Food is $20. Wine is an additional $20. Call 801-503-0362 for a reservation.

"It's kind of the "anti-Valentine's" day," Gilroy explained. "I thought about doing the seven virtues, but that was kind of boring. So we ended up with deady sins, which goes so well with food and wine."

Tin Angel Cafe, at 365 W. 400 South, Salt Lake City, will offer its popular four-course Black Out dinner Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 14-16. Guests who order the dinner are blindfolded for the second course. For the special offering, chef/owner Jerry Liedtke usually creates something with unique textures and tastes to test your senses. Cost for the Black Out dinner is $40. Wine pairings are an additional $25. The restaurant's regular menu will also be available. Call 801-328-4155 for a reservation.

MacCool's Public House, which has locations in Salt Lake City, Layton and Ogden, is offering a "Three Days of Love" menu. It's available Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 14-16 until 11 p.m., and includes soup, choice of entrée and dessert for $27. Choices include lobster bisque soup with a floating sausage, seared sea bass encrusted with coriander and cumin, and Snake River Farms flank steak with a chocolate-espresso rub.

The America West Heritage Center in Logan has scheduled a dinner and a show in the opera house on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 14 and 15. Dinner begins at 6 p.m., with a show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Guests can enjoy a wagon ride to and from the venue, escorted by staff in period attire. Tickets are $55 per couple. To attend the show only, it's $25 per couple. Make reservations by Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 435-245-6050.

There are many more restaurants celebrating Valentine's day on Feb. 14 and throughout the weekend. No matter what day you go, don't wait to make your reservations.

Café Trio • Downtown, 680 S. 900 East and Cottonwood, 6405 S. 3000 East, Salt Lake City; 801-533-8746. Both locations open from 4 to 10 p.m., serving from the restaurant's regular menu, plus holiday specials. Prices from $15-$30.

Caffe Niche • 779 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City; 801-433-3380. Serving a $50 set-price dinner, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

California Pizza Kitchen • 156 S. 400 West, The Gateway, Salt Lake City; 801-456-0075. Dinner for two, includes one appetizer, two entrees and dessert for $30. Available Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 14-17.

Cannella's • 204 E. 500 South, Salt Lake City; 801-355-8518. Serving a special menu with two-, three- and four-course options, priced from $25-$40 per person from 5 to 10 p.m. Reservations accepted.

Cedars of Lebanon • 152 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City; 801-364-4096. Serving 3-course dinner that includes soup or salad, entree dessert for $30 a person. Vegan and vegetarian option available. Entertainment includes live band and bellydancers

Elevations • 75 S. West Temple, inside the Marriott Hotel at City Creek, 801-537-6023. Serving a three-course dinner for two that includes soup or salad, Gorgonzola rib-eye steak and shrimp and dessert. Cost is $50 per couple.

Faustina • 454 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City; 801-746-4441. Serving a five-course dinner for $50. Open for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Specials available Feb. 15-17.

Dojo Restaurant and Sushi Bar • 423 W. 300 South, Salt Lake City; 801-328-3333. Serving a three-course, set-price meal for $50 a couple. Open from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Finca • 1291 S. 1100 East, Salt Lake City; 801-487-0699. Serving a four-course tasting menu with three to four options per course. Vegetarian options available. Dinner is $45, optional wine pairings $35. Seatings from 5 to 10 p.m.

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse • 20 S. 400 West, Salt Lake City; 801-355-3704. The restaurant's Valentine's Day celebration menu is available for four nights, Feb. 14-17, for $69.96 per person. Includes appetizer, amuse and choice of lobster with macaroni and cheese, or beef tenderloin and asparagus.
