Utah gymnasts hold off Wildcats
Utah's gymnastics team held off Arizona 196.6-196.075 Friday in a meet that went from being a comfortable road win to a nailbiter.
Mary Beth Lofgren had to hit her routine on the balance beam for the Utes to win. She delivered, scoring a 9.9. Earlier in the rotation teammate Georgia Dabritz fell and Becky Tutka had a bobble, scoring 9.575.
Those mistakes were enough to give the Wildcats some hope that they might beat the Utes for the first time.
Lofgren kept the upset from happening.
"It was a little nerve-wracking after Georgia fell," Lofgren said. "I just tried to focus on having fun and fight off any nerves."
Happy with the way Lofgren and other individuals performed, Marsden said the Utes still have some work to do, as witnessed by some of the shaky routines.
"It's another step forward in the process, but if we want to compete among the best, we have to compete with confidence all the way through," he said.
Corrie Lothrop won the all-around with a 39.4, her season high. Tory Wilson won her third vault title in a row, scoring a 9.95.
