At the opening-night premiere of “Who Is Dayani Cristal?” were director Marc Silver (who also wrote the documentary script for “Sound City”), screenwriter Mark Monroe and actor Gael García Bernal. The moving political documentary traces the mystery of an unidentified body found in 2010 in the Arizona desert, with U.S. border control and Honduras officials seeking to identify the immigrant who had a mysterious tattoo reading “Dayani Cristal.”
One of the complications of filming the story was that the main character wasn’t alive, said director Marc Silver. García Bernal said they didn’t attempt to film re-enactments because “if they had, it would have been cheesy.”
