Main Street in Salt Lake City gets a touch of Paris with the recent opening of Eva’s Bakery and Cafe at 155 S. Main.
Owner Charlie Perry — who also operates Eva, a small plates restaurant down the street — has remodeled the spot where Vasuvio’s used to be. You can’t miss this “Parisian-style boulangerie,” with its bright blue exterior and yellow canopy.
Inside, there are artisan breads and a glass case with more than a dozen delicious-looking cakes, cookies and other French-style pastries. There’s also a breakfast and lunch menu, with all the items priced at $10 or less.
Today, at lunch, the bakery was doing a brisk business. I had to wait a few minutes in line before ordering a cup of the “soup du jour,” the creamy tomato soup and a square slice of pizza ($3) topped with Creminelli meats and figs. Next time, I’ll try the French onion soup, which is available every day and one of the open-faced croque-monsieur sandwiches topped with ham and cheese or tomatoes. The menu also includes salads and sandwiches, coffees and tea.
The restaurant is a long, narrow space. But it offered plenty of seating at a long counter against the south wall and at the mix of small and large tables in the back.
Eva’s Bakery and Cafe is open Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
