State colleges: BYU men's volleyball loses in upset
The No. 2-ranked Cougars were upset Friday by the No. 13 Flyers, losing in five sets (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-9) in Provo. Freshman Ben Patch led the Cougars with 16 kills and junior Taylor Sander added 14, but BYU was outhit .262 to .203.
Lewis gained momentum throughout the match, dominating down the stretch in the fourth set to force set five. A 6-0 Flyers run in the fifth set finished the Cougars off for good.
The two teams will face off again Saturday at 7 p.m.
Two skiers from the University of Utah's men's team placed in the top 10 at the RMISA Giant Slalom Qualifier in Winter Park, Colo., on Friday, led by freshman Andy Trow with a first-place finish. Senior Ryan Wilson finished in sixth, and sophomore Kristiina Rove finished seventh in the women's competition.
Swimming & diving
BYU lost to Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., with the men's team falling by a score of 158-138 and the women's team losing by 201-94. Preston Jenkins, Jordan Fletcher and Hayden Palmer won individual races for the Cougars.
Track and field
Utah Valley senior Allah Laryea-Akrong broke a school record in the 60M race at the BYU Invitational on Friday with a time of 6.69 seconds the fourth-fastest time in the country. He broke the UVU record by almost one-tenth of a second, while Wolverine teammate Nicholas Taylor tied the old record at 6.78.
