One thing about the trailer for “I Used to Be Darker”: It has a sting in it, especially at the end.

The movie, screening at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, tells of a Northern Irish runaway (Deragh Campbell) seeking refuge with her aunt and uncle in Baltimore. But life isn’t perfect in the States, as the aunt (Kim Taylor) and uncle (Ned Oldham) are at the end of their marriage, and their college-student daughter Abby (Hannah Gross) is in crisis.

Director Matt Porterfield wrote the screenplay with Amy Belk, and the trailer shows something of a musical vibe to the story — as many of the cast members are also musicians.

“I Used to Be Darker” plays in the Next section of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
