South Jordan • Bingham point guard Daylor Youngblood got an earful from his coach at halftime, imploring him to be more assertive, more of a leader.

Those words went through his mind as he stepped to the line for the game-winning free throws in a hard-fought 58-57 victory Friday night against rival Alta.

"Coach really challenged me at halftime in the locker room, saying I needed to step up and become more of a leader," said Youngblood, who scored all eight of his points in the second half. "So I just thought, to be a leader I need to knock them down for our team."

The senior earned the free throws after driving hard to the basket on Bingham's final drive, which started after a timeout with 9.9 seconds remaining.

Youngblood, who coach Marc Dubach said shoots about 80 percent from the free-throw line, hit his second free throw after an Alta timeout and gave Bingham (9-4) just its third lead of the night — all coming in the final 3 minutes, 48 seconds.

"We play to be successful at the end and not the beginning," said Dubach, whose team trailed by as many as eight points in the first half.

"You play to have a chance to be successful at the end, and we gave ourselves that opportunity."

Bingham did so by going to 7-foot senior center Brandon Morley, who scored a game-high 21 points. Despite being banged around by Alta's Carter Heslop and Landon Albrecht, Morley found position for rebounds, which led to uncontested put-backs three times in the second half.

With leading scorer Jordan Evans limited to just two baskets on the night, Morley's offense helped Bingham stay within three points of Alta the entire second half.

"They are one of the better defensive teams in the state, so it feels great," Morley said about the victory. "You always want to beat Alta, and it's always a good game."

RJ Beard hit four 3-pointers and had a team-high 16 points for Alta (5-6), which also got 14 points (11 in the second half) from guard Trevor Hill.
