Police on Tuesday identified one of the two people whose badly burned corpses were recovered from a suspicious southeast Salt Lake County house fire last week.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the male victim had been identified as the owner of the home at 2811 E. Ksel Drive (9457 South), Ralph J. Salazar, 59. Still unidentified was a woman who was found inside the home’s master bedroom with Salazar when firefighters entered the burning structure last Friday morning.

Investigators had earlier determined that both victims had been shot prior to the fire, which likely was set by a third party to destroy evidence.

“Detectives are still evaluating a lot of evidence that was gathered at the scene. Because of the fire and the firefighting efforts it has made it difficult to collect and process the evidence at the scene. The evidence also suggests that this homicide case was not random,” Hoyal said.

He would not further detail that evidence, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“Detectives are looking at a lot of possible suspects in this case,” Hoyal added, saying UPD detectives are asking anyone who might have information on this case to contact them at 801-743-5915.
