After firing former Real Salt Lake assistant Robin Fraser at season’s end, Chivas USA has named Jose Luis Sanchez Sola as its new head coach.
“El Chelis” has spent the last six seasons coaching in Mexico’s Primera Division of Liga MX, and he says he hopes to infuse Latin-style play into a team that finished dead last in the West last season.
“We are going to try to implement a more appealing style of soccer for our fans, without forgetting that we are a team that plays in the United States,” Sanchez Sola said in a team release. “We will look to appeal to both cultures while obtaining positive results for the club. I feel that Chivas USA, at some point, lost that flavor and technique with the ball that is emphasized in Mexico and Latin-America; we must re-establish that part and combine it with the MLS’ style of play.”
Fraser was an RSL assistant from 2007 until he was hired to head up Chivas in 2011. Over two seasons in Los Angeles, Fraser piled up a 15-32-21 record.
