It didn't take long for Cyrpus sharp-shooter Julie Caputo to make her presence felt in Tueasday's road game at Westlake.

Caputo knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 10 of her 15 points in the first eight minutes as the Pirates improved to 2-1 with a 57-39 win at Westlake.

"Everyone on our team knows that we have to practice like we play, and I thought our effort across the board tonight was great," Caputo said.

Westlake closed the score to 20-15 on a Mackenzie Meyers jumper, but each time the Thunder closed the gap, Cyrpus opened it back up with deep shooting or easy baskets in transition.

Another trey from Caputo, a deep ball from Ashley Foster and the inside play of Marquitta Gilson and Abby Barrett helped the Pirates to a 31-20 advantage at intermission.

"I thought Abby Barrett is a unique forward/center and she has a unique motor," Cyprus coach Josh Adams said. "Not only was she crashing down, but she was reading those passing lanes like no other big girl can."

The Pirates kept the pressure on in the second half as Foster knocked down her second triple while Tori Dyson made a pair of 3-pointers in each of the final quarters.

In a play that may reference the teamwork of this Cyprus team, Gilson stole a pass near half-court early in the third. She hustled down and missed the layup, but two Pirates had run the floor with her and were waiting to clean up any miss.

"Until the ball goes in the hole, you never say die and you never give up, and I was very proud of our hustle tonight," Adams said.

Caputo, Gilson and Dyson all reached double figures for the Pirates, combining for 38 points.

For Westlake, 0-2 on the young season, Amie Cochran and Mackenzie Meyers each scored six points. —
