Utah Hoops: Utes focus on the defensive end

Watching film this weekend wasn't pretty for Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak.

He saw lapses defensively. Missed assignments, missed rotations, and wide open shots....for the other team.

So, a lopsided win over Willamette is a bit misleading for Krystkowiak.

"They got a lot of wide open looks that they didn't make," Krystkowiak said. "That's something we have to clean up going forward."

The big issue stemmed from too much penetration off the dribble. The Utes simply let their men beat them too often off the bounce.

That contracted the defense, which led to passes for open looks on the perimeter.

"We have to put ourselves in position where we aren't relying too much on our guys for help defense," Krysktowiak said.

A large measure on practice on Monday was dedicated to shoring up these areas.

Overall, though, Krystkowiak was pleased with the effort of his players on Friday.
