BYU football notes: Seniors honored early due to late kickoff
Provo • Usually, BYU honors its seniors with a ceremony after the game and gives each player a blanket near midfield.
However, due to the late kickoff on Saturday against Idaho (8:15 p.m.), the seniors were honored individually with introductions before the contest and will receive their blankets at the postseason team banquet.
"A little bit different format," said coach Bronco Mendenhall. "Normally, I am able to be with them after the game. But with an eight-something start, that is going to be really late."
Offensive lineman Braden Brown, one of the 23 seniors honored Saturday, said the time went fast.
"It is kinda crazy thinking about it. Here I am, final home game of my senior year. Seems like just yesterday I was here as a true freshman, 240 pounds, running around, having no idea what I was doing out here," he said.
The other seniors who were honored Saturday night were Riley Nelson, James Lark, David Foote, Braden Hansen, Riley Stephenson, Zed Mendenhall, Reed Hornung, Ezekiel Ansay, Romney Fuga, Simote Vea, Russell Tialavea, Uona Kaveinga, Brandon Ogletree, Preston Hadley, Robbie Buckner, Ian Dulan, DeQuan Everett, Ryan Freeman, Austen Jorgensen, Rhen Brown, Walter Kahaiali'i and Jordan Richardson.
Recruiting almost done
During the bye week, several BYU assistant coaches were out on the recruiting trail, but not so much to look for new prospects. Instead, they generally visited players who have already committed to BYU, Mendenhall said.
"We are in really good shape recruiting," Mendenhall said. "Still a few pieces to finish up, with the offensive line issues that we have. But our finding pool has been really good, and we have made a lot of progress.
"And I am really comfortable with where we stand right now. Still a few pieces we have to land, or have come in, but it was a real productive week."
Temperature at kickoff was 27 degrees. ... After winning the coin toss and electing to take the ball two weeks ago against Georgia Tech, the Cougars won the toss on Saturday night and deferred to the second half.
