State colleges: Utah Valley beats NJIT in women's volleyball
Newark, N.J. • Utah Valley moved into a tie atop the Great West Conference with a 21-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-22 win over NJIT on Thursday in women's volleyball.
Erica Nish smashed a team-high 12 kills and Brookelyn Hall tallied 39 assists and 12 digs for the Wolverines (15-8, 6-1), who are tied for first in the GWC with Houston Baptist.
Katie Fritzler and Kalani Norris each had nine kills for UVU.
"It was a great overall game for us," Utah Valley coach Sam Atoa said."We took control at the net with our blocking and our hitting. Kudos to the girls for sticking it out."
The Master's (Calif.) 73, Westminster 62 • Three Griffins scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as No. 5-ranked Westminster lost its season opener at Behnken Field House.
Nicole Yazzie scored 16 points, Kelsi Wells had 15 and Cydney Tibbitts tallied 10 for the Griffins, who shot 29.2 percent from the field and 25.7 percent from 3-point range.
SLCC 59, South Mountain College 56 • Katie Richens tallied 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the 15th-ranked Bruins to victory at Bruin Arena. Lindsay Miller had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Salt Lake Community College (2-1).
