Father John Misty, formerly of Fleet Foxes, in UT this weekend
Father John Misty is the stage name of Joshua Tillman, a former member of Fleet Foxes.
(In an odd coincidence, two other members of Fleet Foxes, who play in Poor Moon, will perform at The State Room the day before Tillman.)
He has been recording solo releases of his experimental folk music for nearly a decade, but his recent release "Fear Fun" is his second as Father John Misty.
In a phone interview, he said he feels more creatively fulfilled than he has been in a while.
"It's more like me enjoying myself," he said.
"Enjoying oneself, for me, is a barometric reading of [whether] what I'm doing is anything good."
Before writing "Fear Fun," Tillman went into seclusion along the California coast and wrote a novel that refocused his thoughts, he said.
"The novel was a chance to write with zero personal context," he said. "I wasn't beholden to any stock-in-trade creative parameters. I got way outside that perspective."
Le Sera and Jeffertitties Nile are also on the bill.
