Freshman takes over at QB in Kansas
Lawrence, Kan. • The senior quarterback has taken a seat and the freshman is under center, perhaps the clearest indication yet that Kansas is starting to focus on the future.
Coach Charlie Weis sat Dayne Crist late against Oklahoma State two weeks ago and put Michael Cummings into the game, and he performed well enough to warrant the start last week at Oklahoma.
While it turned out to be a forgettable debut as a starter for the Jayhawks, Weis is sticking with his young quarterback for Saturday's game against Texas.
"I think at this point, when you are 1-6 and things haven't gone real well, you owe it to your team to see what you've got," Weis said.
Cummings remembered the conversation he had when Weis took over the Jayhawks. The two of them sat down in his office and Weis told him that he wasn't planning to make the raw quarterback change positions, despite his size, and despite the fact that Crist was a former five-star recruit and another one former BYU starter Jake Heaps was also transferring into the program.
Heaps the country's No. 1-rated prep quarterback in 2009 left the Cougars after the 2011 season, when he threw for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. He will have two season of eligibility remaining after his redshirt this season.
Ohio State QB says he's OK after injury
Ohio State Quarterback Braxton Miller, helped off the field and taken to a hospital during Saturday's game, says he is fine and will be ready to go against Penn State.
Miller has practiced with the Buckeyes all week. He has been receiving daily rehab of massage, stretching, ice and anti-inflammatories for a sore neck. Other than that, he says he's 100 percent.
Sports talk show host fired for tweet
A Columbus sports talk-show host who was suspended after he tweeted he wished ESPN's Desmond Howard would get fired or die has been dismissed by his station.
Scott Torgerson tweeted 10 days ago that he wished Howard, who played for Ohio State's chief rival Michigan, would get fired or die so Torgerson could again watch ESPN's College GameDay.
