Famed Christian preacher Billy Graham may have praised Mitt Romney’s “strong moral convictions” last week — he even prayed with the Mormon candidate — but the evangelist’s website still claimed the GOP presidential nominee’s church was a “cult.”
Now that word has been scrubbed from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s website.
“We removed the information from the website,” Ken Barun, the association’s chief of staff, told the Religion News Service, “because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign.”
In another ironic twist, while the LDS Church has been a strong opponent of same-sex marriage, it was a gay-rights group that blew the whistle on the website’s “cult” reference to Mormonism.
