'Celebration Day' film captures captivating Led Zeppelin reunion
Many rock concerts are history-making, but one of the most notable of the past decade has to be Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion.
The British juggernaut took the stage at London's O2 Arena on Dec. 10, 2007, to headline a tribute concert for Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band's first headlining show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 lucky enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery.
Five years later, the much-anticipated film of the event will be shown around the world for two nights at movie theaters, including five in Utah. Following the screenings, the concert film "Celebration Day" will be available in multiple video and audio formats on Nov. 19 .
The concert features the three surviving members of the band: Robert Plant on vocals, Jimmy Page on guitar, and John Paul Jones on bass. Joining the band is Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, on drums. It was the death of John Bonham in 1980 that resulted in the band breaking up.
Despite too many quick cuts used in the rapid-fire editing, the concert film records the quartet's blistering 16-song, two-hour-plus performance, which begins with the band's first single, "Good Times Bad Times," and ends with "Rock And Roll."
In between are classics such as "Whole Lotta Love," "Black Dog," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Kashmir," and, of course, "Stairway to Heaven," which all capture the band's captivating blend of beauty, composition and danger.
The chemistry of the trio is evident, and Bonham is especially impressive in keeping up with Plant, Page and Jones.
Lastly, be sure to tell theater management to turn the volume up on the film before settling in your seat. This is a film meant to be played loud.
