Two multi-vehicle accidents on Interstate 15 near Centerville, one of them fatal, brought northbound and southbound traffic to a crawl Thursday morning.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said a 6 a.m. crash involving a passenger car, a box truck and a semitrailer rig occurred in the northbound lanes at mile post 321. The driver of the passenger car, Nicholas Renteria, 24, of Brigham City, died at the scene.

Johnson said troopers were still investigating the circumstances and sequence of events in that crash, but it appeared the box truck struck the car from behind, sandwiching it with the rear of the semitrailer. Troopers also were investigating witness reports that Renteria's four-way flashers were on at the time of the crash.

Meanwhile, another collision about the same time in the southbound lanes about 4 miles north of the first accident, near Farmington, also was causing major commuter delays. No serious injuries were reported in that accident.
