A Brigham City man was killed instantly when his sub-compact car crashed into the rear end of a semitrailer rig on Interstate 15 near Willard.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said Brandon P. Phillips, 25, was dead at the scene of the 5:13 p.m. Tuesday accident on northbound I-15, near mile post 355.

Possibly contributing to the accident was an earlier, noninjury collision in the freeway's emergency lane that had caused traffic to slow and move toward the left lane, Johnson said Wednesday.

"The semi [driver] was slowing for traffic ahead of him and had moved into the inside lane to avoid the crash further ahead. It appears that the driver of the Dodge Neon failed to notice the slower traffic or that the semi had slowed to a stop," Johnson said.

The 2002 model Neon, traveling an estimated 60-75 mph, smashed into the rear of the rig's trailer, ending up wedged underneath.

The semitrailer's driver was uninjured.
