Playwright Eve Ensler found a strong voice to support her campaign to stop violence against women: Robert Redford.

The Utah-based actor/director appears in a public service announcement, posted Monday on YouTube, to launch “One Billion Rising,” Ensler’s campaign to call attention to the epidemic of rape and abuse against women around the world.

“One billion women and young girls will be raped or beaten in their lifetime,” Redford says by way of introduction.

He’s not the only celebrity speaking in support of the campaign. Videos featuring Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and Lily Tomlin are also featured.

The campaign, marking the 15th anniversary of Ensler’s “V-Day” celebrations (which often feature readings of her play “The Vagina Monologues” on Valentine’s Day), aims to call a general strike of 1 billion women (and men who love them) around the world next Feb. 14. The campaign, Ensler writes on the campaign’s website, is “a call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends. … An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their pwoer in numbers.”
