“Here’s to the crazy ones,” an Apple advertisement once famously said.
That’s certainly the case for the dozen or so people who began camping out behind the Apple Store at The Gateway Mall Thursday morning to be among the first in Utah to buy the new iPhone 5. The phone will start selling at 8 a.m. Friday, so these eager fans are ready to wait as much as 24 hours for the new gadget.
Joe Wilson, Jonathan Lund and Spencer Smith, who formed the third or so group in line, hope to develop a mobile app from start to finish while waiting. The three are co-owners of Provo-based Sand Mountain Studios.
The $199 iPhone 5 boasts a faster processor, slimmer design and a larger 4-inch display. The phone reportedly sold out its initial shipment in the first two hours of online pre-order sales on Sept. 14, forcing late-comers to either wait until October for new phones to ship or stand in line at local stores.
While a line began as early as 7:30 a.m. at the Gateway Mall in downtown Salt Lake City, no line had appeared yet by late Thursday afternoon at the other Apple Store at the Fashion Place Mall in Murray.
