Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture
Unique in its approach, this exhibition offers access to Islamic culture, providing “a view from within” by project director, Sabiha Al Khemir. As an introduction to the arts of Islamic culture, this exhibition inspires both the general public and the specialist. Beauty and Belief poses the question ‚ÄúWhat makes Islamic Art Islamic?‚Äù To address this, Tunisian born Dr. Al Khemir creates a show that features historical and geographic background with succeeding sections of calligraphy, figurative imagery and pattern.

Old 97’s
Spotlight show • Rhett Miller will be a busy man on Saturday. The frontman of the Old 97’s will perform an opening set of solo material, then will join his band for a headlining set that will include playing their 1997 album “Too Far to Care” in its entirety. “It will be 30 minutes of me, then two hours of me,” Miller said in a phone interview. Many bands perform past albums in their entirety, but usually to mark significant anniversaries. But Miller said the band’s new booking agent didn’t want to wait until the 20th anniversary of “Too Far to Care” — his favorite album — to hear the Old 97’s play it. Miller said the album, released in 1997, represented a turning point for the band. “It was a really cool time for us,” he said. “We were as yet unsullied. Then I got sullied in about a year.” When “Too Far to Care” was released, the members of the alt-country band asked themselves if they were lucky enough to get what they wished for. “I knew then I would get to spend my life doing this,” he said. Those Darlins are also on the bill.

Rockfest 2012
Spotlight show • This one-day festival will feature all-female tribute bands Zepparella, Hell’s Belles and The Iron Maidens, and also a face-off featuring four local bands, including Ever Since Tomorrow and Mere Image. Layton-based Mere Image has seven members, none over 18. “Having seven members in our band makes us stand out, in any venue,” said Nathan Triplett, guitarist. “We are so diverse through what we wear, what we listen to and what our hobbies are — however, when we come together, we come together as a whole immovable force.” Ever Since Tomorrow is a quintet of Park City’s Donovan Colton and sister Jenna Lynn Colton, plus Tayler Tripp, of Murray, Kyle Fish, of Park City, and Devin Wolfe, of Holladay. “All the bands competing are quite talented and bring something different to the table,” Tripp said. “Any one of us could easily win. What puts us a step ahead, though, is how dedicated we are. Music isn’t just a hobby for us, and especially for Donny. His passion alone motivates us all to try harder and push ourselves with every performance.” A portion of the proceeds from Rockfest will be donated to America’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Pat Metheny
Spotlight show • After two solo albums — including “Orchestrion” that featured ensemble-oriented music mechanically controlled using solenoids and pneumatics — virtuoso jazz guitarist Pat Metheny has created the Unity Band, which features a tenor saxophone player in a Metheny-led band for the first time in more than 30 years. “A lot of this is built around Chris Potter,” Metheny said in a phone interview about the saxophone player. “He has a certain fluency he showed in his playing. I’m always looking for people who do things I haven’t really thought of.” Although Metheny is never short on inspiration, he said, “Writing for great saxophone players is fun.” The name of Metheny’s ensemble comes from his childhood, when he attended Sunday concerts of another band called the Unity Band at the Unity Church in Missouri. Although the Methenys weren’t members of the church, he said those concerts were formative experiences. “Unity is something I’ve looked at my entire life,” he said.

MOVIES • Listings by Sean P. Means
The weekend’s biggest new movie and the weekend’s best new movie were both hits from this year’s Sundance Film Festival — and delve into the tricky life of storytellers.
The big movie is “The Words,” a layered tale that starts with an author (Dennis Quaid) at a book reading telling of a young would-be writer (Bradley Cooper) who succumbs to temptation when he finds a lost manuscript and decides to get it published under his own name — and what happens when that young writer is confronted by an old man (Jeremy Irons) who claims to have written it. Writer-directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal lavish much care on the film’s glossy style, but can’t cover up for a lack of substance.
The best movie is “Sleepwalk With Me,” a triumphant directorial debut for stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia. He tells an autobiographical tale of a struggling comic dealing with reversals in his career, stagnation in his relationship with his girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose), and a nagging sleep disorder that becomes increasingly dangerous. Birbiglia, best known as a regular on public radio’s “This American Life” (whose host, Ira Glass, is a producer and co-writer here), invests himself fully in the storytelling, often talking directly to the camera to tell his funny, poignant story.
Two thrillers are opening in Salt Lake City this weekend, but were not screened for critics: “Branded,” a futuristic tale of a corporate-driven society; and “The Cold Light of Day,” in which a young bond trader (Henry Cavill) must free his family from intelligence operatives who are after a mystery briefcase.
