An alcohol-fueled party in West Point turned violent late Saturday, ending with one person being shot with a stolen gun, a vehicle crash and a man jumping fences in an effort to elude deputies, authorities said.

Davis County Deputy Scott Harper said about 15 people were at the home at about 10:10 p.m. near 412 North and 2000 West when the shooting occurred.

Harper said deputies had been to the home about 8:30 p.m. to respond to a noise complaint and found that 25 to 30 people were at a party with quite a bit of alcohol.

Harper said the residents promised to keep down the noise and deputies left, only to be called back after numerous people called 911 to report that someone had been shot.

When deputies arrived they found the victim, an Ogden-area man in his early 30s, stumbling near the sidewalk with a gunshot wound in his upper chest and two wounds to the face, apparently caused when he was grazed by bullets.

He was taken to a trauma center where he remained Sunday in a medically induced coma and was listed in serious but stable condition. Harper said he is expected to survive.

The suspected shooter, who is in his 20s and from the Ogden area, ran east out of the home, hopping fences and at some point threw away the gun, Harper said. He was apprehended and was being questioned Sunday.

Deputies, who were assisted by multiple agencies, said they found the handgun, which was reported stolen out of Ogden, in the backyard of a home.

Harper said the suspect’s friend panicked when the shooting started and tried to leave the scene by backing his vehicle out of the driveway but crashed into another car before driving away. He was later apprehended and taken in for questioning.

Harper said deputies Sunday were trying to determine a motive but said alcohol was believed to be a factor.

Charges will be screened with the Davis County Attorney’s Office, he said.
