USU Foot: Wheat steps up, appears to have made travel team
Division I college football has been a rocky transition for Alex Wheat, a 6-foot-5 wide receiver who has all the tools to be successful.
He's gone through difficult times during camp: He's dropped passes, he's at times run the wrong routes, and he's had to adjust to the speed coming in from junior college.
But Wheat is a confident person on and off the football field. He set a goal to make the wideout rotation, and it appears that he's accomplished that goal.
"Alex is a guy who has stepped up and at this point has put himself in position to make the traveling squad," Gary Andersen said.
Wheat is the nephew of Ted Ginn Jr., who is one of the most dangerous return men in the NFL. He's also supremely confident in his abilities.
It remains to be seen how many reps he will get in the first game against Southern Utah University. As of now, however, it appears that he's making a positive impression on the coaching staff.
