A man died Sunday after suffering a heart attack while riding an ATV in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Walter S. Engel, 74, was riding with two friends on the canyon’s popular Mineral Fork Trail around 9:15 a.m. on Sunday when he rolled his vehicle, said Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.
Engel, of Midvale, apparently suffered a massive heart attack while riding near Mineral Basin and veered off the trail as a result, Tammi Oliver, Engel’s niece, said on Monday.
Engel’s ATV rolled and landed on top of him. He died at the scene, Hoyal said.
The accident occurred in an area with no cell phone coverage, forcing Engel’s friends to ride a half hour to reach a place to call for help, Hoyal said.
UPD, Unified Fire Department, a medical helicopter and several search and rescue teams responded to the accident, but the Engel could not be revived.
Mineral Fork Trail is located approximately six miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, on the canyon’s south side.
