Motorcyclist ditches son, speeds away from police
Cottonwood Heights police on Wednesday were trying to find and arrest a motorcyclist who allegedly shoved his son off the bike at a traffic stop and then sped away.
Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said the incident occurred when a motorcycle officer pulled over the man, suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol, on 6400 South near 1300 East on Tuesday night.
When the officer approached the suspect, the man suddenly pushed his 13-year-old son off the rear of the seat of his bike, allegedly telling him to run as the father sped away.
Askerlund said the officer did not pursue the suspect, but the man was soon spotted by Unified police officers nearby who did chase him for a distance before losing him.
The 13-year-old, who was not injured, provided police with his father's name and an address, where officers found the bike and clothing the suspect had been wearing, but not the man himself, Askerlund said.
Askerlund said neither the man's name nor other details of the investigation were immediately being released, but law enforcement officers throughout the Salt Lake Valley were on the lookout for the father-at-large.
