David Darger and Jacob Barlow, who are facing misuse of public money charges in their respective roles as town manager and fire chief of Colorado City, have lost their attorneys.
An Arizona judge approved motions to withdraw Tuesday from their lawyers, who said the pair were indigent and could no longer pay for their services, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
They'll get court-appointed attorneys.
Also interesting? The motions to withdraw indicate the Warren Jeffs-led Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has paid at least some of their legal fees, but isn't doing so anymore.
Barlow has since retired as Colorado City fire chief. Darger is still town manager.
Longtime FLDS attorney Mike Piccarreta, who also represented Warren Jeffs on underage marriage charges in Arizona, wrote in his motion he was "sad" he had to leave Barlow's "very interesting and very defensible case," but it was "financially impossible" to continue.
