A 36-year-old boater drowned while swimming in Utah Lake on Sunday night.

The Salt Lake County man was with a group of friends who took a boat onto Utah Lake at about 7 p.m. near the American Fork boat harbor, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

The boat quit about one mile from shore, and the man jumped from the boat to go for a swim, Cannon said.

The man became separated from the boat, so another boater grabbed two life jackets and swam out to the man. The men lost the life jackets in the wind and drifted even farther from the boat, Cannon said. The boaters called for help; rescuers found both men and took them to a hospital, Cannon said.

The 36-year-old man died; the second man to go into the water was expected to survive.

The victim's name was not being released pending family notifications, Cannon said.
