A section of Highway 189 through Provo Canyon was temporarily closed Tuesday after a truck hauling a trailer loaded with chunks of concrete caught fire.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the truck and trailer caught fire about 9:50 a.m. as the eastbound pickup passed mile post 13 near Vivian Park.

The fire, believed to have started in the engine, spread to nearby grass and the resulting smoke lowered visibility to the point that troopers closed the road in both directions. Traffic was diverted to the Old Canyon Road, Johnson said, until early Tuesday afternoon when normal flow through Highway 189 had resumed.

UHP said the fire burned out the truck and trailer and also some wooden guardrail posts and grass before firefighters arrived to snuff the flames.

The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured, UHP said.
