The Tribune's faith and education reporter Lisa Shencker is writing a story about The Draper City Council deciding to scrap a concert by popular Christian artist Michael W. Smith:
Leaders of a Utah evangelical group are outraged that the Draper City Council decided to cancel a Christian music concert because of a threatened lawsuit, calling the move an assault on religious liberty.
The Draper City Council decided in the closed-door portion of its meeting Tuesday night to scrap a concert by popular Christian artist Michael W. Smith, who was scheduled to perform July 24 at the Draper Amphitheater, said city spokeswoman Maridene Hancock.
She said the decision came after a resident threatened to sue the city over the event.
"The city," Hancock said, "just felt like they didn’t want to use money to fight a potential lawsuit [with] taxpayer funds."
