A minor earthquake rattled parts of the Cache Valley on Friday afternoon, tilting picture frames on walls but causing no damage.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations in Salt Lake City reported that the 3.5-magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:53 p.m. about a mile east of Trenton, which is about 13 miles northwest of Logan.

“We heard a big boom here and just a little shake,” said LaWanna Walker, who has staffed the U.S. Post Office on Trenton’s Main Street for more than 40 years. “The rural route man was in here when it happened. He said it was like an extra, extra big sonic boom.”

McKay Spackman, 17, was outside mowing the lawn at his house on 1200 East when the quake hit.

“It felt almost like thunder, when thunder rocks your house, but a little bit bigger,” he said.

There was no damage to his home. “It knocked some pictures off the wall,” Spackman said. “That’s it.”

The teen, who has grown up in the town of about 470 people, called it the “most exciting thing that’s happened in Trenton in a while.”
