Sandy • How else was it going to end?
Logan High quarterback D.J. Nelson delivered yet another last-second, game-winning touchdown Saturday night, this time leading the North All-Stars to a 20-19 victory in the annual Utah High School Football Coaches Association 4A/5A All-Star Game at Alta High.
Nelson’s second touchdown of the game came with just 2.2 seconds remaining as the North team rallied from a 19-3 deficit in the second half.
“We ran Logan High two-minute drill there,” Logan receiver Jameson Hartman said. “When it comes down to it, D.J. just knows what to do. He gets focused when he needs to.”
Timpview’s Rickey Shumway caught two touchdown passes from Alta quarterback Tyson Blackner, and Westlake’s Addison Bates returned a Nelson interception 28 yards for a 19-3 lead early in the third quarter.
The intensity on the field demonstrated that though it was just an exhibition, winning was important.
“It was one last chance to take the field, and both teams played real hard,” Nelson said. “Everyone takes it serious.”
Nelson led a roster that included six Logan teammates and the Grizzlies’ coaching staff.
“The other kids on this team became my brothers during the week,” Nelson said. “It was just an overall fun week and a great ending.”
