This August 17, President Thomas S. Monson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will mark his 85th birthday at a celebration in the Conference Center on Temple Square with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performing.
“Golden Days: A Celebration of Life” will include some of President Monson’s favorite Broadway show tunes and hymns.
Also promised are "notable guest artists from a variety of musical styles"
“We are very pleased to have such talented artists joining us to honor a great man,” said Choir president Mac Christensen, in a press release. “I happen to know the songs being performed will delight President Monson.” The evening’s program also will honor President Monson’s remarkable life with a series of vignettes about his life and special tributes from friends, community and church leaders.
Former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback and Hall of Famer Steve Young will share the duties of master-of-ceremonies with former national news anchor and author Jane Clayson Johnson.
Free tickets will be distributed through a random selection process. Those interested in attending may register on the internet at www.lds.org/events now. Those who do not receive tickets are encouraged to “stand-by” for last-minute seating. The line will from at the north gate on Temple Square prior to the evening’s event.
The program will be shown at various LDS stake centers Saturday, August 18 with additional rebroadcasts by satellite to many areas around the world. BYUtv will rebroadcast the hour-and-a-half program Saturday, August 18 at 7 p.m., Sunday, August 19 at 8 a.m. and again at 4:30 p.m., MDT.
