Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune Davis' Nate Ferguson is tackled by a friend on the field after the win. Davis High School boys soccer team defeated Copper Hills High School 1-0 during their 5A State Championship game Tuesday, May 22 2012 in Woods Cross.

Woods Cross • An hour after Davis held on to defeat Copper Hills 1-0 and John Taylor had finished hugging and high-fiving and pointing to the supporters he couldn’t reach, the senior forward turned to Twitter to celebrate.

Part of his message? “We will not be denied.”

It sure looked that way Tuesday, as the Darts turned a second-minute goal by Mitch Parkinson into their biggest win of the season, a Class 5A semifinal victory that sends Davis back to Rio Tinto Stadium, site of its 2010 championship.

“We always had the dream,” Parkinson said, “and we knew what we had to do to get there.”

The next and final step will be against Brighton, which dispatched Weber 3-1 in the other semifinal. The Bengals were one of three teams to beat the Darts in the regular season and it was convincing: 4-1 on March 23.

That a 1-0 lead would hold against Copper Hills, the No. 2 seed from Region 3 making its first semifinal appearance, was unexpected. The Grizzlies scored three or more goals in four straight games before Friday’s 0-0 quarterfinal draw against Riverton that ended in a shootout.

But Davis wasn’t about to give Copper Hills a chance.

“I think we’ve struggled coming out hard and strong in games this season,” coach Souli Phongsavath said, “especially big games. So that was refreshing to see us start off really well.”

Brighton 3, Weber 1 • Skyler Milne’s month keeps getting better.

Brighton’s 6-foot-4 center midfielder scored in the ninth minute of Brighton’s 3-1 win, his sixth goal in three postseason games, matching his postseason scoring total with the six goals he scored in the regular season.
