Kearns • To state the obvious, Olympus advanced through the consolation bracket of the Class 4A baseball tournament on Monday, defeating Woods Cross 7-5 in a pressure-packed, eight-inning affair.
What wouldn’t be obvious to the average observer is the fact that the Titans have been playing pressure-packed baseball for the past three weeks.
This is a team that needed a play-in victory over Herriman just to qualify for the postseason. This is a team that’s won its past four elimination-bracket games. This is a team that’s been injury-ravaged and short of pitching.
Yet, this is a team that’s persevered through every land mine in its path thus far.
“It’s almost as if we’ve been playing playoff baseball for a month now,” catcher Brock Battilyon said. “We knew that we have the offense to win games. We just have to play well every time we come out.”
As a result, Olympus will be a confident team at Kearns High on Tuesday when it faces Maple Mountain, 5-2 winners over Bountiful in the second consolation game of the day.
When the Titans faced a 5-3 deficit in the top of the sixth inning, there was no issue. They simply used RBI singles from Battilyon and Tanner Larsen to tie things up. When the score stayed knotted heading into the top of the eighth inning, Olympus calmly scored two more runs to take the lead for good.
And when the heart of Woods Cross’ order came up? The forgotten man, pitcher Parker Rawlings, came into the game and shut it down, despite missing most of the season with a hand injury.
This is a team that believes it has what it takes to make it through the consolation bracket. The question will be whether or not it has the pitching needed to play such a taxing schedule.
“We do have the pitching, it’s going to take everyone contributing,” Titans pitcher Rigby Butikofer said. “If we hold our end of the bargain, we have enough hitting to get it done.”
Maple Mountain 5, Bountiful 2 • Maple Mountain never trailed in eliminating the Braves.
Timpanogos 13, Springville 10 • Timpanogos has scored a combined 21 runs in its past two postseason wins, avoiding elimination for the second straight game.
Salem Hills 4, Provo 1 • Salem Hills scored twice in the third inning and twice in the sixth inning to take control and advance to meet Timpanogos on Tuesday.
