Provo • With his teammates being held back by coach Jessica Watts, Park City’s Matt Groy calmly walked to shake his opponent’s hand. In defeating Blake Newman of Ogden 6-2, 7-5, Groy won the 3A third singles title but more importantly, his victory gave the Miners their first state title since 2006.
“Tennis comes with a lot of pressure,” Groy said. “I wanted to win not just for myself but for my entire team.”
After the match, Groy was gang-tackled by his teammates congratulating him. Park City’s season of hard work and development was put on the shoulders of the one player who always carries the team.
“Matt did what he had to do,” Watts said. “He knew the gravity of the situation and carried the pressure of the team.”
Park City has been flirting with a title for the past three years. After narrowly taking second last year, the Miners worked as a cohesive group to take top honors this year.
“Going undefeated in Region 10 set us up well for today,” Watts said. “We put all our heart on the courts and came up big.”
Dixie and Desert Hills tied for second place.
The contest for first singles was more akin to a street fight than a tennis match. Juan Diego sophomore Brendan Kempin defeated Park City’s Kevin Colopy in a brutal match that tested both players’ endurance. In a grudge match between two players who train with each other, Kempin sidelined his friendship in pursuit of a state title.
“We’re friendly at practice,” Kempin said. “But in the state tournament, we become really competitive.”
Kempin smashed the ball confidently with a strong forehand and good service. This is his first state title after finishing second last year.
“He’s always a gentleman,” coach Arthur Miyazaki said. “He always plays hard and gives himself a chance to win.”
The Thunder rolled in doubles. Desert Hills swept both first and second doubles in dominating fashion. First doubles junior Mason Ford and sophomore Christian Davis handled Dixie 6-1, 7-5. Sophomores Clay Hardy and Preston Parmenter beat Hurricane 7-5, 6-2.
Dixie’s Tevan Balian won the second singles 6-4, 6-1 against Park City’s Stefan Dancy.
